What each road marking means ?
These rules are designed to keep traffic flowing smoothly and, more importantly, to keep everyone safe.
Line Types and Overtaking Rules
Single Solid Line: Think of this as a "do not cross" wall. You must stay in your lane, and overtaking is not permitted.
Double Solid Lines: These provide an extra layer of restriction. Overtaking is strictly prohibited in both directions.
Double Dashed Lines: These are more flexible. Overtaking is permitted in both directions, but you must do so with extreme care and only when the road ahead is clear.
Single Dashed Line: This is the standard "pass with care" marking. Overtaking is permitted when it is safe to do so.
Combination Lines: These are directional. You can only overtake if the dashed line is on your side. If the solid line is on your side, you must stay put.
Defining Road Boundaries
Edge Line: These solid white lines mark the outer limit of the roadway, separating the driving lanes from the shoulder or verge.
Lane Separation Line: These dashed lines are used to separate multiple lanes of traffic that are all moving in the same direction.
Bicycle Lane Buffer: A solid line (often accompanied by green paint or icons) that creates a dedicated and protected space for cyclists.
Guidance and Intersections
Pedestrian Crossing: Large white blocks (often called "Zebra" stripes) indicating where people cross. Drivers must yield to pedestrians here.
Direction Arrows: These are painted directly on the lane to tell you if that lane is for turning, going straight, or both.
Turn Lane Markings: Specific markings (like curved arrows and dashed boxes) that guide you into the correct position for making a turn.
Merge Markings: Often seen as angled lines or "chevrons," these show you how to properly transition from two lanes into one or enter a highway safely.
